  1. The name of the state comes from the Massachusetts tribe of Native Americans. Other nicknames for the state include Old Colony State, Old Bay State and Pilgrim State.
  2. Cranberries are Massachusetts’s official state berry, and it has the second-largest cranberry crop in the nation (behind Wisconsin). Cranberry juice is also the state’s beverage.
  3. Massachusetts capital city is Boston which had a population of 685,094 in 2017.

  1. Massachusetts has the lowest rate of divorce in the nation. The divorce rate is 2.2 divorces per 1000 people, according to the US Census Bureau.
  2. Massachusetts is a sport-loving state, as both basketball and volleyball were invented there. After being invented by James Naismith back in 1891, basketball was played first in Springfield. Volleyball followed soon after (4 years later) and was invented by William Morgan.
  1. The first Dunkin Donuts was opened in 1950, in Quincy. Coffee back then cost just 10 cents! It is still open to this day, and the shop was retro renovated back in 2011 to give its original look back.
  2. The Boston Terrier is deemed the official state dog of Massachusetts back in 1979. It is a bulldog/English terrier hybrid which is now the Boston University’s athletic team’s Mascot. They are very easy to train and friendly but can be stubborn at times.
  3. The Little Brewster Island in the Boston Harbor was home to the first lighthouse in the U.S and was built back in 1716.

  1. Harvard, the Ivy League private research University is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
  2. Until 1903, you didn’t need plates or a license to drive in Massachusetts. All you needed before that was a set of wheels.
  3. The largest heist at the time occurred in Plymouth in 1962. Two armed men stopped a mail truck and got away with the contents. It is estimated that the contents were worth up to $1.5 million. This money was never recovered, and the crime is yet to be solved.
  4. In addition to this heist, the largest art theft ever in history occurred in Boston back in 1990 at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Thieves posed as Boston police officers and walked out with 12 paintings (estimated to be worth over $100 million). Most pieces have yet to be recovered, and the museum is still offering rewards for leads on them.
