Sybil Ludington

Sybil Ludington took to her bike.

Aged sixteen, Putnam County (NY) resident Sybil Ludington rode her bicycle for around 40 miles on this day in 1777 - to warn people of British troops on the horizon. It was a pivotal moment in the American Revolutionary War.

Chernobyl ruins

The Chernobyl disaster loomed large.

One of the biggest nuclear disasters of all time took place in Chernobyl, Ukraine, on this day in 1986. The reactor explosion led to mass contamination, and it’s thought the disaster was responsible for tens of thousands of fatalities in the years that followed.

The Holocaust

Germany banned Holocaust denial.

In 1994, five decades on from the end of World War II, German courts made it illegal nationwide to deny that the Holocaust, during which more than six million Jewish people were killed, ever occurred. The ruling arose on April 26th, as a result of the NPD party seeking legal cause to deny the atrocities ever happened.

Bill Cosby

Cosby went to prison.

Once regarded as “America’s Dad,” comedian and TV star Bill Cosby was found guilty of drugging and sexual assault on April 26th, 2018. He received a maximum term of up to ten years in prison, but was released due to a dispute over proceedings in 2021.
