The Third Anglo-Dutch War came to an end.
The Third Anglo-Dutch War finally came to an end on February 19th 1674. It ended with England and the Netherlands signing the Treaty of Westminster.
Aaron Burr was arrested.
Whether you’re a history buff or just a fan of musicals, you have likely heard of Aaron Burr! The former Vice President of the United States was arrested on February 19th 1807 in Wakefield, Alabama. He was arrested for treason and put in Fort Stoddert.
The South Shetland Islands were discovered!
This date back in 1819 was a huge day for the United Kingdom, as valiant explorer William Smith came upon the South Shetland Islands while exploring the region! He immediately claimed them in King George III’s name - as you would!
Edison created a cracking new innovation.
You may know of the phonograph under the name of gramophone, or even the more recent record player, but it was patented under the name of phonograph on this very date back in 1878. Who’s responsible? Everyone’s favorite brainbox, Thomas Edison!
The shortest Presidential term in history?
On February 19th 1913, Pedro Lascuráin became the President of Mexico. However, his victory was short-lived as his term only lasted 45 minutes! It is the shortest presidency term on record - no one’s managed a shorter reign at the head of a country.
A literal change of heart!
February 19th is one date that William J. Schroeder never forgot! Back in 1985, it is the date he finally left the hospital after receiving an artificial heart. Sadly, he’d pass away the year after - but heart transplants are now commonplace all over the world.
