Pinocchio made his movie debut!
On this day back in 1940, Walt Disney Studios released its second full-length animated film, Pinocchio! It went on to become the first animated film ever to win an Academy Award. The movie was rereleased multiple times over the decades to come, and the story has been further adapted by multiple studios elsewhere.
The US banned imports and exports from Cuba.
February 7th 1962 marks the day that the United States officially banned all imports and exports from Cuba. The embargo officially began back in 1961 and continues to this day, although under different rules and regulations.
Grenada became independent!
On this day back in 1974, Grenada officially became independent from the United Kingdom! It was a British colony from 1833, and was one of several territories to break free from the UK’s oversight in the 20th century.
Bruce McCandless II and Robert L. Stewart took a walk in space.
Astronauts Bruce McCandless II and Robert L. Stewart made the first untethered space walk on this day back in 1984! They achieved this by using the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), during the STS-41-B Mission of the Space Shuttle Program.
Jean-Bertrand Aristide was sworn in as Haiti’s President.
Jean-Bertrand Aristide was officially sworn in as President of Haiti on February 7th, 1991. He was Haiti’s first-ever democratically elected president!
The Maastricht Treaty came into force.
The Maastricht Treaty was officially signed on this very day in 1992. It was the treaty that eventually led to the creation of the European Union - which also brought about the Euro, or EUR, as a currency in the early 00s.
