🗓️ On This Day - March 7th
March 7th completes our first week in March and brings us a lot of history, national holidays, and historic birthdays to celebrate! You may well be welcoming an occasion or two of your own today - but regardless of how you choose to spend it, here are some of the most interesting things about March 7th!
On this day
The Roman Empire gained two new leaders.
Back in the year 161 AD, Emperor Antoninus Pius died. Both Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus then succeeded him as co-Emperors. This was the first time the Roman Empire had ever seen two Emperors co-rule at the same time - though, let's face it, the Roman Empire was all about big "firsts"!
Henry VIII got a bounceback on his divorce request.
On this very date back in 1530, King Henry VIII’s divorce request from his then-wife was rejected by the Pope. This led the King to make some serious adjustments to his court, including the creation of the Church of England, which would permit divorce! Bizarrely, the CofE largely exists because King Henry wanted nothing more to do with Catherine of Aragon - strange but true.
Ring ring!
Here in the US in 1876, Alexander Graham Bell received the patent for the telephone! His creation changed the way we communicate forever - but, oddly, he used to answer his innovation with the phrase “Ahoy, hoy”. It didn’t really catch on!
Sherlock came back!
On this very date back in 1905, Sherlock Holmes made a triumphant comeback to print by highly popular demand! The author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, finally released The Return of Sherlock Holmes after the public pressured him to release more Sherlock Holmes stories - how can you turn down fan requests?
Roald Amundsen made an important discovery.
On this date back in 1912, Roald Amundsen announced that he had discovered the South Pole. He had officially located the area on December 14th, 1911. Many people have traveled there and back since!
The Selma to Montgomery marches began.
Back in 1965, Martin Luther King Jr and hundreds of civil rights protestors began their historic march across Alabama. Regrettably, the Alabama State troopers and 600 protesters came to a clash. Many were beaten, including the future congressman, John Lewis, who ended up being hospitalized for his injuries. It would take three attempts for King Jr and his protestors to complete their march.
