On This Day - May 29th

So, we’ve nearly reached the end of the month, but May 29th is far more than just a day on the way to June! Today, we take time to remember those we’ve lost, and, believe it or not, to start stocking up on paper clips. Here’s everything you’ll want to know about May 29th.

On this day

Virginia Plan

The Virginia Plan was introduced.

Back in 1787, James Madison and Edmund Randolph proposed the Virginia Plan to the Constitutional Convention. The plan suggested that there should be three branches to the national government, legislative, executive, and judicial. As we all know, the rest was history!

Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth made an important address.

In 1851, Sojourner Truth addressed the Black Women’s Rights Convention. It was the first-ever to be held, and took place in Akron, Ohio. Her famous speech has been republished several times, most popularly known under the heading “Ain’t I A Woman?”

facts about coca cola

Coca-Cola was patented as a medicine.

In 1886, American pharmacist John Pemberton began advertising Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia. However, at the time it was advertised as a medicine! Thankfully, our teeth have since recovered a little - as our dentists frequently tell us to step away from the sugary stuff if we can help it!

toasted bread

The way we eat bread changed forever!

In 1919, Charles Strike filed for a patent for his new invention. The invention would automatically pop up toasted bread! It’s hard to believe there was ever a time when toasters weren’t a kitchen staple - so thanks, Charles!

snowfall

We dreamed of a White Christmas.

In 1942, Bing Crosby recorded the song “White Christmas.” It went on to become the world’s best-selling single of the period and is still climbing the charts every Christmas time to this day! To many, it’s regarded as the quintessential Christmas pop song (though Mariah Carey’s vied for that position for many years now).

Special Days Falling on May 29th

Now, we’ve seen some pretty fascinating events, it’s time to see what we can appreciate today! Time to cook up some chicken and break out the paper clips!

National Coq Au Vin Day

Not everyone can make a good coq au vin, but when it is cooked to perfection, look out, you may never want to eat anything else ever again! This incredible French dish has been adapted and changed by chefs all over the world, but at the end of the day you will always need two things, some chicken, and some wine. Today’s a good day to try the dish for the first time if you haven’t already.

paper clip

National Paper Clip Day

As strange as it may seem, even the smallest things in our lives deserve some appreciation, including the things that hold our pieces of paper together! Yes, staples are great, but so too are paper clips! And, you don’t need any fancy tool to apply them or remove them! So, give paper clips some love today!

Trail of Tears

Memorial Day

Of course, May 29th is primarily known for being Memorial Day. It is one of the most important days of the year, when we take the time to honor people who have given their lives and their freedoms to protect our own. So, reach out to those serving, thank them for what they do, and see what you can do to help them.
