In 1813, the Battle of Leipzig took place on this day. It was one of the largest battles in Europe prior to World War I. Napoleon’s forces were eventually defeated by Austria, Prussia, and Russia.

In 1900, the Anglo-German Treaty was signed by Great Britain and Germany. The treaty marked the agreement between the two to maintain the territorial integrity of China as well as support the open-door policy.

Mao Zedong

The Long March began.

In 1934, Mao Zedong and his 25,000 troops began their Long March from the south of China to the north and west. The march took 6,000 miles to complete!

Augusto Pinochet

Augusto Pinochet was caught.

In 1998, Augusto Pinochet, the former Chilean dictator, was arrested in London. He was caught on a Spanish warrant for his arrest and a request for his extradition on murder charges.

Typhoon

A typhoon hit Japan.

In 2013, Typhoon Wipha hit Japan. 18 people were killed in the natural disaster. It was actually the second Typhoon Wipha on record, as there had been a previous disaster bearing that name to hit the region in 2006.
