King George III

The UK crowned its new king.

In 1761, the coronation of King George III of the United Kingdom and Queen Charlotte took place. The two were known for being very much in love and went on to have fifteen children together!

The French First Republic was formed.

In 1792, the French First Republic was formed by the National Convention. Following the French Revolution, the National Convention removed all power from the French king and formed the Republic.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln threatened the south!

In 1862, the President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln, issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation threatened to free all the enslaved people in the rebel southern states should those states fail to rejoin the Union by January 1st, 1863!

Rudolf Virchow

Rudolf Virchow made his opinion on Darwin very clear.

In 1877, Rudolf Virchow delivered an anti-Darwinian speech to the Congress of German Naturalists and Physicians in Munich. During his speech, he spoke against the teaching of the theory of evolution in schools specifically. It’s a debate that rages on to this day, even in the US, with many people following religion believing evolution has no place in school curricula.
