Olympus is an incredible place that plays an important role in Greece’s landscape, history, and mythology. So, it’s only right that we should learn more about the home of the Gods, right? Here are some fun facts about Olympus you’re going to want to remember.

1. It’s a real place!

You will likely have already heard of Olympus and its place in Greek mythology, but it is an actual place you can see for yourself! Olympus is Greece’s highest mountain of all, and it’s also the second-highest in the Balkan Peninsula.

2. Reaching the heavens!

Olympus reaches an incredible 2,918 meters (around 9,573 feet) high! It can be found in the Olympus Range, near the border between Thessaly and Macedonia. You really can’t miss it if you’re visiting Greece.

3. It’s the home of the Gods.

Olympus wasn’t just any random location in Greek mythology – Mount Olympus was considered the domicile of the 12 Olympian gods, including Zeus, Artemis, Hera, Demeter, Poseidon, Athena, Ares, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Dionysus, Apollo, and Hermes. The gods were said to reside on the summit of the mountain.

4. Zeus had a pretty high throne!

Zeus is well-known for being king of the Gods, and, naturally, his position on Mount Olympus was the most important one! Zeus ruled from his throne atop Mount Olympus. He was known for his control over the sky and weather, and he would convene meetings of the gods to discuss important matters.

In Greek mythology, Mount Olympus was depicted as a majestic and awe-inspiring mountain reaching into the heavens. It was said to be perpetually covered in clouds and surrounded by a golden gate guarded by the goddesses known as the Horae.

If you believe the mythology, the clouds around Olympus were great at hiding a lot, as legend states that the gods and goddesses of Olympus were portrayed as living in opulent palaces and halls! Zeus had his throne room, Hera had her own sanctuary, and other gods had their designated areas. Just as well we hadn’t learned how to fly back in ancient times!

7. It’s a playground for many legends.

Mount Olympus has served as the backdrop for several important events and myths in Greek mythology. For example, it was where the gods defeated the Titans in the Titanomachy and where the gods gathered for the wedding of Peleus and Thetis.

8. The Throne of Zeus is real!

Mount Olympus has several peaks, with Mytikas being the highest and most famous. Mytikas, which is also known as “The Throne of Zeus,” stands at an elevation of 2,918 meters (or 9,573 feet)!

9. It’s a protected area.

Although the Gods may do their bit in protecting the area, we mere mortals have also done our bit to keep Olympus safe. The Olympus National Park was established in 1938, and it covers an area of about 2,900 square kilometers (1,119 square miles). The area holds diverse ecosystems, such as forests, alpine meadows, and rocky slopes.

10. UNESCO recognizes the home of the Gods.

In 1981, Mount Olympus was designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, recognizing its ecological significance and promoting the conservation of its unique ecosystems. Mount Olympus is well-known for its rich biodiversity. It is home to a huge variety of plant and animal species, including rare orchids, wildcats, wolves, and the critically endangered Balkan chamois.
