Hagia Sophia was dedicated
In 563, the Byzantine church, the famous Hagia Sophia in what was then Constantinople, was dedicated for what’s believed to be the second time. This was after having been destroyed by rounds of earthquakes – perhaps one of the unluckiest buildings of all time!
Madrid burned down
In 1734, the Royal Alcázar of Madrid burned down. This caused the loss of many artworks, though the paintings of Velázquez were thankfully saved. Even so, it’s a historical moment that’s devastating to historians and art lovers alike. Who knows what else was hidden behind those walls?
The War of 1812 came to an end
In 1814, the Treaty of Ghent was officially signed. Thus ended the War of 1812 between the United States, the United Kingdom, and their allies. Sadly, it wouldn't be the last time that either country would go to war – and unfortunately, we're still yet to see full "peace time."
San Francisco also burned
In a fairly grim theme to Christmas Eve, on this day in 1849, the first great fire of early San Francisco started on the east side of the Plaza. It was the first of a total of seven great fires in two years – meaning that this period of time really does seem to be dangerous for blazes.

Libya Independence Day
More importantly, however, is Libya Independence Day. It too is observed on December 24th every year. In 1951, Libya officially gained independence from France and Britain after the UN General Assembly voted that Libya became independent in 1952. A constitution was officially drawn up, and King Idris I declared that the country was officially independent.
National Consumer Rights Day
For the people of India, December 24th is National Consumer Rights Day. Consumers can sometimes feel a bit powerless, especially around this time of year, which is so focused on mass consumption, that today is the perfect day to remember that you do have rights, and they should not be infringed upon during all the chaos of December!
