Henry IV made a big decision!

In 1593, Henry IV of France converted from Protestantism to Roman Catholicism. He did so in order to secure his position as King of France, which, to be fair, was probably worth it!

Louis Blériot made history.

In 1909, French aviator Louis Blériot became the first person ever to cross the English Channel by airplane! He flew from Calais, France, to Dover, England.

Mussolini met his match!

In 1943, Benito Mussolini, the Fascist dictator of Italy, was arrested and deposed following a meeting of the Fascist Grand Council. He’d meet a fairly grisly end – and thus marked the finale of another dictatorship arising from the 1930s.

A miracle baby was born!

In 1978, Louise Brown, the world's first baby to be conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF), was born in Oldham, England! It was an incredible moment in history and has led to the successful births of countless other IVF babies!

Concorde met a tragic end.

In the year 2000, Air France Flight 4590, a Concorde supersonic aircraft, crashed shortly after takeoff from Paris, France. The crash caused the deaths of all 109 people on board and four on the ground.

Feast of St James The Apostle

Over in Spain, July 25th marks a pivotal religious holiday for the nation’s patron saint. St James was one of 12 apostles chosen by Jesus Christ, and after Christ’s death, he took his gospel to the people of Spain and Galicia, where he is still regarded as a patron saint to this day. James would eventually return to Jerusalem, where he died a martyr. Today is a feast day held in his honor, meaning many people across Spain celebrate with lavish dishes and family gatherings.
