So, we've finally reached the very end of the month, and you're probably most looking forward to starting the month of July! But don't move too quickly, the month of June is not over yet! And, as it happens, there is so much to consider and cherish about June 30th. Here are some of the best things you'll want to remember about this very special date!

Charles Darwin’s theory caused some debate!
In 1860, a famous debate took place at Oxford University’s Museum on Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. The debate was mostly dominated by arguments flying backwards and forwards between Samuel Wilberforce and Thomas Huxley – and to be fair, evolution still generates debate to this day! Seriously, guys, can’t we “be evolved” on the subject?!
Speaking of theories…
June 30th seems to be a pretty popular date for theories and speculation, as some years later – on June 30th, 1905 – Albert Einstein presented his paper on special relativity. This revolutionary concept that discussed space and time would eventually see publication by 1916 – and it’s safe to say that much we know about the planet and our universe is rooted in this body of work!
A giant fireball fell from the sky!
In 1908, a colossal fireball believed to have been caused by a burst of air from a large comet fell to Earth. It leveled around 80 million trees close to the Stony Tunguska River in Russia, in the process! It remains the biggest impact of its kind ever recorded.
The British no longer held Hong Kong.
In 1997, the British lease on the New Territories in Hong Kong finally expired! Yes, the British actually leased the Hong Kong region for 99 years - and China was keen to demonstrate that it was just a loan!
Spain made a big change!
In 2005, Spain finally legalized same-sex marriage! We're still waiting on much of the rest of the world, but good on you, Spain!

Asteroids are strange fixtures of the sky – they can be absolutely stunning but also very dangerous, depending on where they land! We’ve had a few near misses with some sizeable specimens over the years. Today’s a great day to learn more about some of the biggest asteroids that have landed on Earth, and how we’ve handled them!
