October 29th is easily one of our favorite days of the year. But why is that? As it happens, October 29th is more than just another date leading up to the holiday season. Happy birthday if you’re celebrating today, and in the meantime, here are some of the most important things to know about October 29th!
On this day
King Cyrus marched into Babylon.
In 539 BC, King Cyrus “the Great” of Persia marched into Babylon. There, he freed the Jewish captives and allowed them to return home.
Conradin was executed.
In the year 1268, Conradin, the final rightful male successor of the German Hohenstaufen dynasty, met his demise through execution. Charles I of Sicily carried out the execution, which also claimed the life of Frederick I, Margrave of Baden.
German soldiers stood up.
In 1918, German sailors famously refused to obey orders to fight the British naval forces. Instead, they led a revolt in the naval ports of Wilhelmshaven, thus beginning the German Revolution.

Turkey Republic Day
Every October 29th is an incredibly important day for the people of Turkey as it marks their Republican celebrations! Although the country was effectively a republic since April 23rd, 1920, it was only when the first President chosen by the Grand National Assembly, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, declared the country a republic that the deal was finally signed. And that famous day was, of course, October 29th, 1923.
World Psoriasis Day
World Psoriasis Day is dedicated to those suffering from psoriasis in the hopes of raising awareness about the disease and encouraging more people to do their research into what this skin disease actually means for millions. It’s an uncomfortable condition, which, while treatable, is often misunderstood.
World Stroke Day
Strokes affect people all over the world at any given moment – and they can be life-threatening. Yet, few of us actually understand what causes strokes, how to recognize signs, and what to do if we see or feel them! So, World Stroke Day is here to encourage us all to learn more and better prepare ourselves should we ever witness someone we think is having a stroke.

This month in history
The Nuremberg War Crimes Trial began. This historic legal proceeding saw charges brought against 24 former leaders of the Nazi party, among them prominent figures such as Hermann Göring. Over the course of a 10-month trial, the verdicts were delivered: 12 Nazis were condemned to death, three received life sentences, four were sentenced to prison terms, and three were acquitted.
