On This Day - October 29th

October 29th is easily one of our favorite days of the year. But why is that? As it happens, October 29th is more than just another date leading up to the holiday season. Happy birthday if you’re celebrating today, and in the meantime, here are some of the most important things to know about October 29th!

King Cyrus marched into Babylon.

In 539 BC, King Cyrus “the Great” of Persia marched into Babylon. There, he freed the Jewish captives and allowed them to return home.

Conradin was executed.

In the year 1268, Conradin, the final rightful male successor of the German Hohenstaufen dynasty, met his demise through execution. Charles I of Sicily carried out the execution, which also claimed the life of Frederick I, Margrave of Baden.

German soldiers stood up.

In 1918, German sailors famously refused to obey orders to fight the British naval forces. Instead, they led a revolt in the naval ports of Wilhelmshaven, thus beginning the German Revolution.

The Suez Crisis turned into a war.

In 1956, the Suez Crisis turned into war as Israel invaded the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula. It was quickly followed by an airborne assault by France and Britain.

Facts about China

China lifted its ban on family limits!

In 2015, China finally announced the end of their one-child policy. The policy had been in place for 35 years – which had helped to curb the incredible population growth the country is known for.

Every October 29th is an incredibly important day for the people of Turkey as it marks their Republican celebrations! Although the country was effectively a republic since April 23rd, 1920, it was only when the first President chosen by the Grand National Assembly, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, declared the country a republic that the deal was finally signed. And that famous day was, of course, October 29th, 1923.
